Nothing makes Lauren happier than seeing a child beam with excitement after successfully getting into crow pose for the first time, students laying peacefully in savasana, or children filled with happiness as they dance, jump, play, and learn yoga poses through Kidding Around Yoga. Lauren is a passionate elementary school teacher, adult yoga teacher, kids yoga teacher, and a mom. The combination of those things, along with her love for the Kidding Around Yoga program, make her the perfect teacher for your child. With a background in early elementary education, Lauren knows the value that yoga can have on all children as she has seen its success in her own classroom.
With a love of sports and fitness, and a current yoga practice, Lauren began to introduce yoga into her classroom by teaching students various postures from her own yoga classes or by researching ways to teach kids yoga. While the effect was positive, she knew she could do better. So, in July of 2013, she enrolled in a kids yoga training through Kidding Around Yoga where she not only earned her certification, but more importantly learned how to translate “adult” yoga into a format that is fun, exciting and age appropriate for all children. Lauren teaches yoga through song, dance, and games and believes that teaching kids yoga is more than teaching “fitness”; it’s imparting skills that can positively propel children throughout their entire lives. Children learn yoga in a multi-sensory environment where they can learn in an way that nurtures their own learning style. In her experience Lauren believes that yoga can help students physically with body awareness, flexibility, coordination and encouraging physical activity that is non-competive, cooperative, and compassionate. Mentally Lauren has seen it help students concentrate better during the day, focus on academic tasks, increase relaxation, and pay greater attention when they are presented with new information. Lauren feels that she has been given a tremendous gift each day that she is able to teach yoga to children.
Kidding Around Yoga with Lauren can be incorporated in the public or private schools, as a part of their after school program or as an elective during the day, at club houses, Yoga studios, dance studios, recreational centers, girl scout troop meetings (we have a Yoga Fun Patch they can earn!), privately, as a mommy-and-me class, at indoor playgrounds, libraries, churches, parks, local events and even at birthday parties! The opportunities are ENDLESS!
Lauren grew up in Moraga and played every sport she could get her hands and feet on. She went on to study journalism at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where she became a 3-Time National Champion for women’s lacrosse. Upon graduating, she traveled around the world teaching English in the Czech Republic, Morocco, and South Africa. She fell in love with teaching and came back to the states with the desire to teach kids. Lauren earned her multiple subject teaching credential through California State East Bay while working full-time for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. She has taught 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades in the San Ramon and Pleasanton School Districts as well as the Hope Unified School District in Santa Barbara, California. To deepen her understanding of yoga, she earned her 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher certification recognized by Yoga Alliance through Core Power Yoga in Berkeley.
