When I took my Kids’ Yoga training, they told us about Really Stinky Feet Spray. It has a soothing aroma of lavender, and I was told to use it in case my students came to class with some old school smelly feet. At the moment, I wasn’t so sure about it but during my very first Kids’ Yoga class, one of my students takes out his shoes and says, “Teacher what do I do If I have really stinky feet?” I just couldn’t believe it! So for my next class, I was ready with my Really Stinky Feet Spray in hand to help my kids feel a little less self-conscious about it.

After a few Kids’ Yoga classes, I realized that there so many uses for my Really Stinky Feet Spray, besides the obvious air freshening effect, though when in a room filled with kids doing exercise air freshening is more than enough,  but there is still a lot more to it.

The true benefit of the Really Stinky Feet Spray is aromatherapy. The national association for holistic aromatherapy explains:  “Aromatherapy can be defined as the art and science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize, and promote the health of body, mind, and spirit.  It seeks to unify physiological, psychological and spiritual processes to enhance an individual’s innate healing process.” [1]

One of the secret ingredients in the Really Stinky Feet Spray is lavender, and as the University of Maryland Medical center explains “The name lavender comes from the Latin root lavare, which means “to wash.” Lavender may have earned this name because it was frequently used in baths to help purify the body and spirit. However, this herb has also been used as a remedy for a range of ailments from insomnia and anxiety to depression and fatigue. Research has confirmed that lavender produces slight calming, soothing, and sedative effects when its scent is inhaled.” [2]

The Really Stinky Feet Spray’s lavender fragrance has a soothing and calming effect indeed. As I learned in my Kids’ Yoga teacher training, it is very useful to help relax my students for the final relaxation, or Secret Garden When they are on their trips to the Secret Garden, I spray it and tell them that if they concentrate they can even smell the scent of the flowers. Kids in my class adore it! I often use it to help them concentrate through meditation and to create a special ambiance in my class without using smoky incense which can be irritating.

Because it comes in a spray bottle, it’s so easy to use. It has the exact mix of ingredients for it to be delicious, not overwhelming, and you can take it with you everywhere. You can even take advantage of the Really Stinky Feet Spray at home (or in the car while playing the song) and practice some stress management for kids with your own family. Because the Really Stinky Feet Spray can help us relax and deal with insomnia, it is perfect to prepare the kids for a good night’s sleep by spraying a little bit of it on your children’s pillows before they go to bed. You can even spray it on your own pillow and experience the calming and relaxing effects for yourself!

Before I use it, I always verify that my students are not allergic to lavender because I never know. I am very careful not to spray it directly on the children’s eyes or faces. Just sticking to their feet or in the air does the trick.

Kidding Around Yoga’s special Really Stinky Feet song is the perfect way to start my class and get my students to practice the candle pose, which provides them the many benefits of an inversion. Who knew stinky feet brought with them so many possibilities?
