Scarecrow Yoga

Scarecrows and autumn go hand-in-hand, so bring the fun of the farm right into your yoga classes with these scarecrow-themed games and activities:

  • Scarecrow Pose: Let’s start with the basics, Scarecrow pose! While it isn’t a “traditional” posture in the yoga repertoire, it is fun to explore what a Scarecrow pose might look like! Imagine you are a scarecrow hanging in a field. Your spine is the post that holds you up. Because you have no bones, your limbs are floppy. You can imagine looking for crows to scare away. With the rhythm of your breath, twist your upper body (head, face, neck, shoulders, and arms) around the post of your spine. Breathe as you move back and forth, side to side. Twist your spine back and forth and just let your arms hang loose as if they were empty coat sleeves, and your knees remain bouncy, too. You could say, “Crow!” and that means to freeze in whatever position your body is in.
  • Scarecrow Poem: Sung to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, act out this poem as you sing out loud. The challenge is to start the song in different poses and try to complete the movements from that pose (think Dancer, Tree, Warrior, etc.)

Scarecrow, Scarecrow, turn around                                                                                                                                     Scarecrow, Scarecrow, look at the ground
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, raise your arms high
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, wink with one eye
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, bend your knees
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, flap in the breeze
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, wave and sway
Scarecrow, Scarecrow, keep those crows away

  • Human Scarecrow: In partners, choose one player to be the scarecrow and the other is the farmer. The farmer has a collection of stackable items (like pompoms, blocks, etc.) and he/she balances as many items on the scarecrow as possible while the scarecrow holds a pose (you can assign the pose or let them choose). After a set amount of time, count the items balanced on the scarecrow. Then switch partners.
  • Pass the Pose: Players line up behind the game leader, standing 6 feet apart from one another. Players close their eyes. They can only open their eyes when they hear their name called. The leader turns around and says the name of the person behind him or her. Once the player’s eyes are open, the leader silently does a series of three poses that the player will need to memorize. After the leader completes the movements, he or she will turn around and face forward. That player will turn to the person behind him or her and say that person’s name. After the person’s eyes are open, the first person will  silently do the same series of three movements, and then turn and face forward. Try and pass the motions from beginning to end without making a mistake, or else everyone does 10 jumping jacks!
  • Crow Pose: If you are going to explore scarecrows, then you have to practice Crow pose! Stand up tall with your feet pointing out and a few inches in from the edges of your mat. Squat down, knees pointing out. Now take out your crazy glue (reach into your back pocket) and glue the back of your upper arms to the inside of your legs…make sure they are stuck there if you want to go into Crow. Put your hands on the floor with fingers spread out. Keep your arms glued to your legs, LOOK UP, LOOK UP, LOOK UP. Lift your tail up and stay on your tippy toes. Pick up one foot, and if you feel steady enough, pick up the other. Keep looking up. Kidding Around Yoga has a song that teaches the Crow in a fun, safe way.
