Little Sally Walker? NOT! We have rewritten this popular fun game. It is common in girl “circles”….no pun intended….but we plan on sharing this with all of our students.

Have the kids stand in a circle and pick ONE child to skip around the inside of the circle as everyone sings the “chant” below. When the kid in the middle picks a pose everyone does it.

Here comes the little yogi, skipping down the street
Didn’t know what pose to pick so he/she stopped in front of me….
Hey Yogi do your pose do your pose  do your pose
Hey Yogi do your pose, do your pose and SWITCH

Then the child that he/she was standing in front of takes a turn. Be prepared… this could go on for hours!

Peace begins with me!

So I’d like to share a GREAT story with you as well as an activity. This is how Cassie and I teach meditation to our kids. (not the ONLY way… but the best!). Since I have taught at very religious places and public and private schools and well just about everywhere you can imagine I try to keep the OM out of the basic meditation. I only add in OM when I know I comfortably can. Holding your hands in Chin Mudra….(make the A-OK sign) Tap your pointer finger with your thumb and say, “Peace”, tap your middle finger with your thumb and say: “Begins”, tap your fourth finger with your thumb and say, “With”, and then your pinky finger, “Me”. We say this out loud together 4 times, and then for up to a full minute or more for older kids …silently in our heads. But we can always see the fingers going. Parents love it. Teachers love it….and kids are practicing…It’s all good! Today at our title one school where we volunteer to teach 35 kids at once, one of the kids was asked to stand along the fence and not participate due to his inappropriate behavior before Yoga class. He had to stand there and watch our entire 45 minute class.

It was horrible for me  =(

Some folks will tell a badly behaved kid they have to miss Yoga. I say THAT kid needs Yoga. So I’m glad he at least got to watch….it paid off…keep reading….

And then at the end of class during our final meditation we see him moving his fingers and meditating with us. How cool is that??? Life is good at KAY. I love this work!

Cassie and Jeff thanks for coming every week. This is a great Karma Yoga, service project and I can’t wait to spread this program all over the country. We have a lot of work to do….it’s going to be great!

Plow Pass

Sitting in a circle with your students legs out and toes touching. You start by holding a small ball in between your feet. Everyone says together: “Do the plough, do the plough, (everyone does the plough) pass to __________(someone’s name in the circle) and take a bow. When you say “take a bow” you go from the plough pose to forward bend. And you pass the ball to someone….And then the ball gets passed from kid to kid to kid. The children love to pick the next person. You get to rock back and forch from plough to forward bend. YO-gotta do this it feels great!!

Pass The Orange!

Sitting in a circle with a group of kids…knee to knee, squeeze your belly and pick up the orange (or orange ball if that suits you better) with your feet, and say: “Orange you grateful for ______”. (Suggestions: Family, Peace, Friends, Yummy food, or YOGA.)

Then pass the orange to the next person with your feet. If it gets dropped just say: “No worries, pick it up and continue”.

The kids get to pass the orange, learn about gratefulness, practice mindfulness, AND… they get to use their “abs”. We’ve been doing this for years and it’s just REALLY sweet!
Try it… you’ll like it!
